Like humans, metaphors also have a time-clock. A metaphor that has lost its attractiveness due to its frequent use is termed as a dead metaphor. The main purpose of a metaphor is for the reader to be able to visualize an action. Due to its frequency in usage, dead metaphor loses its charm and often goes unnoticed. Most quoted example of dead metaphor is "body of an essay." Many users do not realize that the phrase is actually a metaphor but use it as a literal statement.
